Summercamp 2026 Throwback

»From the Laboratory to the Workbench« – Experimental co‑creation between material, crafting and research

From August 30 to September 5, 2026, international students from over 11 different countries and Fraunhofer researchers gathered at the Fraunhofer Center in Benediktbeuern to explore sustainable construction in interdisciplinary (research, crafting and design) laboratory and workshop settings. They tested materials, developed prototypes, reflected on collaborative processes, and presented their projects.

At the end of the week-long ideas workshop, the three teams presented their creative approaches and prototypes in order to receive feedback and further inspiration from a jury comprising members of the Fraunhofer Institute and external experts.

  • Team: 'Bauwissen Reloaded' asked themselves: why do historic buildings often stand for centuries – and what can we learn from this today?
  • Team 'Materials Made from Mushrooms' explored the possibilities that mycelium-based materials offer for sustainable material solutions: lightweight, energy-efficient to manufacture and biodegradable.
  • Team 'Biobased Materials' looked into the numerous plant-based raw materials, such as straw and marsh plants, that Benediktbeuern had to offer and which hold great potential for bio-based construction applications.

Bauwissen reloaded

How can historic buildings often stand for centuries—and what can we learn from them today?

In the Bauwissen reloaded team, we investigate how materials, construction methods and crafting contribute to the longevity of historic buildings and how this knowledge can be further developed for contemporary construction. At the summer camp, we will analyze selected historical construction methods, materials and joining methods, test their properties and consider together how they can be adapted to meet today’s requirements.

Materials from mushrooms

Mycelium-based materials open up new possibilities for sustainable materials solutions.

In the Materials from mushrooms team, you will learn about different mycelium-based materials and experiment with their unique properties. We will work together to investigate how these materials can be used to develop components, surfaces or products and in which applications—such as architecture, design or packaging—they can be a true alternative to conventional materials.

Team Biobased Materials

Benediktbeuern Abbey offers a wealth of plant-based raw materials such as straw and wetlands plants those have great potential for bio-based construction applications.

In the Biobased materials team, we focused on how such raw materials can be effectively processed and implemented in the construction industry. At the summer camp, they workedk with plant-based materials and agricultural residues and explore their potential uses, such as in insulation, facade or wall elements or for acoustic applications.

Fraunhofer Center for Conservation and Energy Performance of Historic Buildings Benediktbeuern

The Fraunhofer Center for Conservation and Energy Performance of Historic Buildings Benediktbeuern is located in the Alte Schäfflerei (old barrelmaker's shop) of the Benediktbeuern Monastery. Through research and demonstration work, as well as the acquisition and transfer of knowledge, the center finds answers to issues concerning the sustainable and lasting preservation of evidence marking the identity of our architectural culture.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP and the Fraunhofer Information Center for Regional Planning and Building Construction IRB have restored the listed building dating from the mid-18th century in accordance with historical building requirements and under energy-saving aspects to create a “Transparent Building Site” and have put it to new use. In this way, the center actively promotes the transfer of knowledge between heritage conservation, building practice, research and industry. The technical focus is on the study of historical monuments, old buildings worthy of protection and building physics.

Organisation of the Camp: Anian Trettenhann & Sebastian Krück (Fraunhofer IBP).
